  22. How to Use the PowerBase Desktop
  23.  
  24. The PowerBase Desktop is a fully mouseable, text-based
  25. user interface with pulldown menus, hot keys, and sizeable,
  26. scrollable windows. If you're not already familiar with this
  27. type of interface, the following instructions will help you
  28. get acquainted.
  29.  
  30. Choosing a Tip
  31.  
  32. After the opening dialogue, the PowerBase Desktop appears
  33. with the first menu of tips -- the Database menu -- pulled
  34. down. If you're using the mouse, you can select a tip from
  35. this menu or pick another menu by clicking a category name
  36. on the menu bar. If you're using the keyboard, use the arrow
  37. keys to move among the menus. Hit Enter while a tip's name
  38. is highlighted to see that tip. There are two "immediate"
  39. items on the menu bar -- Help! and Exit! -- that don't have
  40. pulldown menus beneath them. The exclamation points indicate
  41. that if you select one of these items, it performs a
  42. function immediately.

  44. Reading a Tip
  45.  
  46. If you're using the mouse, you can use the scroll bars on
  47. the right side and bottom of the window to move through the
  48. text. If you're using the keyboard, you can use the arrow,
  49. PgUp, and PgDn keys to do the same. Ctrl-PgDn takes you to
  50. the end of the file, while Ctrl-PgUp takes you to the
  51. beginning. You may wish to practice using these keys while
  52. you're still in the help window.

  54. Printing a Tip
  55.  
  56. You can send a copy of the tip in the current window to your
  57. printer by pressing Alt-P. The printing routine sends a
  58. formfeed character after the last page of text for your
  59. convenience (especially useful if you have a laser printer).
  60. However, if you have one of the rare printers that do not
  61. understand formfeeds, you may still need to eject the last
  62. page by hand.
  63.  
  64. This help file, incidentally, is also a "tip," so the Alt-P
  65. command works on it as well. If you'd like a printed copy of
  66. these instructions, including the Quick Key Reference, try
  67. pressing Alt-P now.
  68.  
  69. Extracting a Listing
  70.  
  71. Some of the tips in this collection are accompanied by
  72. listings that you may want to use as the basis for your own
  73. work. To copy the listings (which are marked off by lines
  74. saying "BEGIN LISTING" and "END LISTING") to a file, press
  75. Alt-F. You'll be given an opportunity to select a path for
  76. the file. If you are about to overwrite an existing file,
  77. you'll be given an opportunity to change your mind before
  78. the write is performed. Note that this command saves ONLY
  79. THE LISTING to a file, not the whole tip.

  81. Moving Between Windows
  82.  
  83. The PowerBase Desktop allows you to open several tip files
  84. at once -- or open the same tip more than once to view two
  85. different sections simultaneously. Each tip you open appears
  86. in its own window -- up to a maximum of 9 windows.

  88. If you're using the mouse, moving from one window to another
  89. is easy. Simply click the mouse on any portion of any
  90. window, and it will come to the front and become the current
  91. window. To bring each open window to the front in turn with
  92. the mouse, click on "F6 Next" on the status line at the
  93. bottom of the screen.
  94.  
  95. If you're using the keyboard, you can gain immediate access
  96. to any specific window. Simply press Alt plus a number key
  97. (on the top row of the keyboard, not on the numeric pad) to
  98. take you to the window (if any) with that number in the
  99. upper right-hand corner. If you want to leaf through the
  100. open windows, the F6 (Next) key will take you to each in
  101. turn, round-robin fashion.

  103. Resizing and Moving Windows
  104.  
  105. To move a window with the mouse, "drag" it by its top border
  106. to a new position. To resize a window using the mouse, drag
  107. the lower right-hand corner until the window is the size you
  108. want. If you don't have a mouse, press Ctrl-F5 to enter
  109. Move/Resize mode. In this mode, you can use the arrow keys
  110. to move the window. Shifted arrow keys (that is, arrow keys
  111. pressed while you're holding down a shift key) resize the
  112. window. When you're done moving and resizing the window,
  113. press Esc to return to normal operation.

  115. The F5 (Zoom) key grows a window to the full size of the
  116. screen; hitting F5 restores it to its original size. You can
  117. achieve the same effect by clicking the mouse on the "zoom
  118. button" -- the arrow-shaped control in the upper right-hand
  119. corner of each tip window. You can also zoom and unzoom a
  120. window by double-clicking its top border with the mouse.

  122. If you have more than one window open, and would like to see
  123. them all neatly arranged on your desktop, you can press
  124. Alt-T to tile the windows or Alt-C to cascade them. These
  125. commands are disabled if you don't have at least two windows
  126. open.

  128. Closing Windows

  130. To close a window, click on the "close button" -- the
  131. box-like control in the upper left-hand corner of the
  132. window. If you don't have a mouse, Alt-F3 performs the same
  133. function.

  135. Leaving the program
  136.  
  137. To leave the PowerBase Desktop, press Alt-X. You can also
  138. click the mouse on the Exit! item on the menu bar, or on the
  139. Alt-X item on the status line, to leave the program.

  141. To Skip the Opening Graphic
  142.  
  143. If you don't want to wait for the opening graphic
  144. sequence to complete each time you start the program, you
  145. can proceed directly to the desktop by adding the parameter
  146. "+n" to the command line. You may also choose to use this
  147. parameter if you have an unusual or incompatible graphics
  148. adapter that does not display the opening graphic properly.

  150. About the Tips In This Collection
  151.  
  152. All the tips in PowerBase *.* Volume IV appeared in the *.*
  153. column of PC World between January and December of 1991.
  154. They were updated, corrected, re-edited for disk, and
  155. converted to executable and application-specific file
  156. formats by Brett Glass.
  157.  
  158. How This Program Was Written
  159.  
  160. The PowerBase Desktop was written in Turbo Pascal using
  161. Borland International's Turbo Vision, an object-oriented
  162. "framework" for text-based applications. The opening
  163. graphics were done with the BGI (Borland Graphics Interface)
  164. bitmap and font routines, also included with Turbo Pascal.
  165. The 3-dimensional PC World logo was provided by Robert Kanes
  166. of PC World's art department; it was scaled for CGA, EGA,
  167. and Hercules graphics adapters by two programs developed
  168. especially for that purpose.
